Rosie Daffern

- Artist / Illustrator -

Animals frequently take focus in my paintings, I feel this is because I have always felt  a love and affiliation with them, particularly of native British Wildlife such as mice, foxes, birds and hedgehogs. I also have a strong interest in the ideas of animal shamanism, I also often explore these in my art.

My art is mostly about process rather than trying to achieve a final image. I enjoy creating work that allows my subconscious to see forms in natural and man-made marks. I begin to work by creating a textured background and making spontaneous drawings, this then picks out forms instinctively rather than to create them deliberately. Using spontaneous marks I reveal narratives and figurative forms.

I like the idea of transporting people into another brilliant world through my art, full of character, colour and textures. When painting, I attempt to put good protective energy into them so for the new homes they go into it would carry this with them.

I often work in oil paint on canvas, as I love the brilliant colour that can be achieved with the medium, I look to the renaissance for ideas in colour balance and composition. Narrative is also important to me: I am inspired by primitive art as I enjoy how archaic artworks are representative of the stories. I believe that these stories allow the artwork to posses a magic power. I hope to incorporate these ideas into my own artwork and aim to create images that posses their own magic qualities.

Education: National Diploma in Art & Design, Foundation Studies in Art & Design and Ba (Hons) Illustration Degree.

My dream for the future is to be able to live off the profits from selling my paintings (Wouldn't that be lovely) and in the meantime I hope to create and improve my skills and take part in as many exhibitions as I can.
